Amazon and others have found that eliminating 100 milliseconds of latency increases sales by 1%.! But latency on the web is difficult to overcome.
The free WordPress plugin “instant.page” uses just-in-time preloading – it preloads a page behind a link just before a user clicks on it.
How that? Before a user clicks on a link, they hover over that link. If a user hovered for 65ms, there is a one in two chance that they will click on that link. So Instant.page starts preloading at this moment, leaving on average more than 300ms to preload the page.
Another option is to load the pages when the user starts pressing the mouse without loading them first. This results in zero unused requests while improving page load time by an average of 80ms.
You can also preload the page on hover or as soon as a link is visible and trigger the click when the user presses the mouse, making your pages the fastest in the world.
How does this work on a mobile device?
A user begins touching their display before releasing it. Page preload takes an average of 90 ms.
The human brain perceives actions that last less than 100 ms as instantaneous. This means that instant.page ensures that your pages appear immediately even on 3G (assuming your pages can be rendered quickly).
Pages are only preloaded when there is a good chance a user will visit them, and only the HTML is preloaded, taking into account the bandwidth and CPU of your users and servers.
